I have been searching around and I haven't found any tutorials on how to make a schematic file.

Can anyone help me?

Open with mcedit :P
or if you re trying to put one in your world, select the import tool and find where ever you have the file saved

What do you mean you can't save it?  It won't save to your HDD from your browser... or you can't save it into Minecraft?

It says windows cannot recognize the file. And then wants me to select a program to use.

Sounds like you are selecting RUN file rather than SAVE file.

Save it directly to your HDD then open it with MCedit *after* you've loaded the world you wish to import it into.

OK... here's a series of questions to help understand a little better your setup.

1)  What web browser are you using, and what version?  (IE6, IE7, IE8, Firefox 3, Firefox 3.5, Safari, Chrome, etc)

2)  What exactly are you doing to download the files

3)  Where are the files being downloaded?

4)  Can you see them from Windows Explorer?

5)  What steps are you following to import them into MCedit?

I am using Firefox 3.5 I am clinking on a link someone has on this website                                              http://www.mcschematics.com/index.php?topic=987.0
thats the page

I then click "save file"  they go into my "downloads" folder. But now every time I click on it it tries to read it in Adobe Reader.

Open Mcedit choose the world you want to put the schematic in and on the bottom where you have all the options it should say import schematic.

Yea you have to locate where you saved them. So if you saved them on your desktop you click the scroll that pops up after hitting import  and choose desktop.

wosh... don't open them from the Downloads folder.

Open MCedit... and load your world.

Then click on the Import button at the bottom.

This will bring up a file browser... change the change to the Downloads directory and you should find the Schematics files in there.
