So I made a dragon
« on: April 07, 2011, 08:40:49 PM »
After 2 full days messing around and being constantly tripped up by technical problems and buggy software. I've created a passable custom dragon for import into minecraft. I know there are plenty of dragons out there available free on the net, but I wanted a curled up lying down dragon for a particular project I'm planning.  I searched high and low for an existing free 3d model in that format, but to no avail. So, I taught myself Blender basics (man what a frustratingly un-intuitive UI and control system, but it's a powerful tool), and created one for myself from scratch.

I know the legs and feet are pretty sloppy,  but I'm pretty happy with the rest of it.  Here you go, here is a screenie from Blender, and a screenie from the the imported Binvox schematic in game:

Dimensions are 92W 97L 46H

Feel free to use it, but please give credit, particularly if its on a server.

Very impressive!

I know how you feel about blender though. I needed something similar for another game, oblivion actually, and learned some basics for making swords and junk but that dragon is pretty impressive for just 'blender basics' haha very nice.

Thats really cool! i know a little about blender myself (although my models look like dust compared to yours) and i have to ask, how did you import the blender model to minecraft? i have been trying to figure that out and failing.

Thanks guys, glad you like it.

In terms of the import, http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=55910&p=981947#p981947 has pretty much everything you need to know. I'd imagine there are other posts about the process on this forum too, but don't have time to check at the moment.

Basically

1) Create or import a file into blender.
2) Export it as an *.obj or *.dxf file to the folder you installed binvox into
3) Run binvox with a series of commands setting out the dimensions of the file, and either use view vox to create blueprints, then build it in game, or just use the "-t schematic" command to export it directly into a schematic.
4) Mess around with the schematic as you wish in MC edit and import it into whatever world
5) Profit.

Are you using this for your dragon mountain on your map?  Maybe scaled up a bit to be extra epic

Yeah it's in my map. Cant scale it up much, as it's in the mountains above sea level. The spines are at about 60 blocks up on the map.

It looks very nice, the only thing that would make it much better in my opinion, would be to now use colored wool and colorize the dragon.  That I think would take it way up high to the highest level if done right.

Thanks guys, yeah it's a while since I made this one, and I agree the schematic would have been better in colored cloth, but it's really just a blank canvas, do with it what you will, in my map the stone fits fairly well, as the dragon is part of a mountain range, but I will be varying it a bit with mossy cobble and cobble for some parts.

This is amazing for Blender "basics"  teach me?  :mobsheep:  (If you want to and actually have time lol)
Downloading this just for the amazement of having one on my hard drive.

I couldn't teach you I'm afraid, forgotten half the skills already to be honest, and I found it frustrating enough alone, but I started with a few beginner tutorials then followed this one, which really helped:
