Dev Rant #1 Rivers and the Flood Function

a tutorial on how to make good rivers.

rivers.... they flow down. and on a height map of the USA the valleys are vague at best. the most unfortunate thing about making rivers is that you have to use the flood function. this means that you have to anticipate the flow of the river down to the block and use the level tool to draw the course of the rivers by hand. sense this is a height map and elevations are very relevant, you have to step the river gradually because if you use the same height from one end of the river to the other you will end up with the grand canyon on every river you make. at each step you need to dam off the river so you can flood the section without flooding the section below it and make sure that when the area floods no water will escape the path you have designed. if it does most often you flood the whole map to the level the river is at.

its very labor intensive and monotonous but this is just the beginning

having completed the river sections forget about them until the map is finished for release. leave in all of the dams and empty the whole map of water with the sponge refill each lake ocean and all river sections by hand without flooding the map. (iv had some water bugs that don't go away when you use the undo function.)

then when the map is finished... (the whole map..biomes spawn point, everything) render your final version in creative and go through the map and break down all the dams by hand in 'creative' to create the flowing water and not angled drops. this is the best and easiest way to create rivers that are not eye sores.

let no one say that i didn't work hard on this map lol
a lot of experimenting lead to this process
dedication is key to making a good map grit your teeth and get it done.
ill post a pic of the final results later.

woodlawn i think its possible but you wont like the results. world painter wont import any buildings from your server map.. your best bet is to experiment with the merge function. i have not dabbled much into this function because i don't plan on using it for this project. but im sure someone on the official forums can help.

Progress Report. iv got rivers down to a science. time consuming but necessary if you want a good map. iv made lots of progress in the last few days. sense my primary focus is on rivers, here are the ones i have done: The Mississippi, the Ohio. The Platte, and The Missouri. most importantly i have found and drawn the 3 hardest rivers to identify. the Red river, The Arkansas River, And The Rio Grand. rivers ill will do at in the next few days include The Columbia, The Snake, The Hudson, The Colorado, And the saint Laurence River. after all these behemoths are done ill start focusing on smoothing out the rough patches and make the map more friendly. (but not too friendly) then ill texture in the areas with more grass dirt rocks sand ect in the appropriate areas. hopefully by this point ill figure out how to use moded biomes and blocks in world painter........(but will also create a mod free version). ill run tests, then release the map.

I plan on having all the rivers done by the middle of next week. (with any luck) then things will go much faster.

pic of the rivers im doing (+the snake and st. laurence)

New shots of my work. all rivers east of the Rockies are finished. sand lines in the west will be rivers when i get to them. smoothed the landscape a bit to cut down on spikieness and to flatten out the plains a bit. hope this adds some perspective to the size of the map

Does the map only go up to the 49th? (Or is it just the restrictions of screen size that hide the land of moose and Mounties?)

The map is what i was able to pull form a Nasa height map program. I realize a lot of Canada is missing but i figured enough was there to include it in the description also had most of Mexico and even a few islands in the Caribbean

If you are planning on attempting any cities, I could try some occasional builds of where I live for your map.  Such as our capital building or something.  let me know if you are planning that far ahead.  I know it's all landscaping atm, but that doesn't mean you have to stop there.  PM me or email me if this is the case, we'll discuss how to go about it.  I'd say building even a small part of downtown here will be a long challenge also.  Anyways - gl on your build, it looks fantastic.

This was the development page, the actual thread was in the world share board.

Found here

There is a download link but it's been removed, wtfblake has been inactive for some time, it
also seems he has quit Planet Minecraft, so it's most likely the project was abandoned.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
